How it works
The idea behind the beats.
Binaural beats
Play a 200 Hz tone in your left ear and a 216 Hz tone in your right, and your brain hears a third sound that isn't in either ear: a soft beat at the 16 Hz difference. That only works when each ear gets its own tone, which is why this mode needs headphones.
Pulse, for speakers
Without headphones both ears hear the same thing, so BrainSwitchs gently rises and falls the volume of a tone at the chosen rate instead. You feel the rhythm without anything in your ears.
Made live, not baked in
The beats are generated in the app while you listen, not recorded into the music. That's why you can change the rate or intensity mid-session with no gap.
Brain rhythm bands
Theta
4 to 8 Hz
Linked with drowsy, dreamy, loosely associative states.
Presets: Dream 6 Hz
Alpha
8 to 12 Hz
Linked with relaxed, wakeful rest and calm attention.
Presets: Flow 10 Hz · Reset 8 Hz
Beta
13 to 30 Hz
Linked with active thinking, problem solving and concentration.
Presets: Steady 14 Hz · Deep work 16 Hz
Gamma
30 Hz and up
Linked with tightly focused processing.
Presets: Sharp 40 Hz
Researchers group the brain's electrical rhythms into these bands. The presets borrow the ranges as a guide. Studies on beats are mixed and everyone responds differently, so treat the rate as a setting to try, not a switch.
In the app
Right next to your timer.
The Sound panel sits under the Tracker, in the canvas Sound menu and on the Live brain session pill. Music, beat, how you listen and texture, all in one row.
- 1
Pick a mode
Start a Logical or Creative session from the Tracker, the canvas Sound menu or the Live brain.
- 2
Choose your sound
Music, a beat preset, how you're listening and an optional texture. Defaults are already set for each mode.
- 3
Press start
The sound fades in over two minutes while your timer runs, and that side of your brain lights up.
- 4
Finish the session
When the timer ends, the sound fades out over ten seconds and your minutes are added to your balance.

Why it's different
Not another playlist.
Focus music apps play sound. BrainSwitchs ties it to the work you're doing and shows you the result.
It follows your work
The sound matches your Logical or Creative mode, on the canvas, in the Tracker and in the Live brain.
You can see it
While a session plays, that side of your Live brain glows and pulses, and the minutes count towards your weekly balance.
Live controls, not fixed tracks
Change the beat rate, intensity, texture and volume while you listen, with no clicks or gaps.
Speakers or headphones
Binaural beats when you wear headphones, and a gentle pulse when you don't.
Smooth sessions
A 2-minute fade in to ease you into focus, and a gentle fade out when your timer ends.
No rumble, no harsh tones
Noise is shaped to stay soft and warm, never like an engine.
Many people with busy minds find that steady sound helps them settle into deep work. Brown noise, music without lyrics and a gentle rhythm are all here, so you can find the mix that works for you.
Use headphones for binaural beats. Focus sound is designed to help you settle into a mode. It is not a medical treatment.
